Toshiba America has announced an expanded voluntary recall of defective lithium-ion laptop batteries manufactured by Sony Corporation.  The batteries, which pose a fire hazard due to overheating, were not included in the much wider recall of Sony laptop batteries issued in 2006, also due to fire hazards from overheating.  Most of the affected batteries accompanied new Toshiba Satellite and Tecra notebook computers with any of the following model numbers:

Also, certain batteries sold by Toshiba as replacement accessories, and not included with new computers are affected by this recall.  Those batteries bear the following part numbers (it should also be noted that not all of the batteries with these part numbers are affected, but that all affected accessory batteries will bear one of these part numbers): 

• PA3451U-1BRS
• PA3399U-2BRS

For more reliable identification of batteries affected by this recall, the manufacturer urges notebook owners to download their free Battery Check Utility software, which can diagnose problem batteries accurately, or to consult the identification instructions in their Manual Battery Pack Identification notice.
