April 2008: Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol abuse is prevalent among many different demographic groups in the United States, including all of the following, to name just a few examples:

  • College students who binge drink at local bars.
  • Pregnant women who drink and put their babies at risk for fetal alcohol syndrome.
  • Professionals who drink after a long day of work.
  • Senior citizens who drink out of loneliness.

To help more Americans recognize the seriousness of alcohol abuse, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has designated April 2008  Alcohol Awareness Month.

  • According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), answering "yes" to any of the following diagnostic questions could indicate that you have an alcohol problem:

  • "Do you drink alone when you feel angry or sad?
  • Does your drinking ever make you late for work?
  • Does your drinking worry your family?
  • Do you ever drink after telling yourself you won't?
  • Do you ever forget what you did while drinking?
  • Do you get headaches or have a hangover after drinking?"

According to SAMHSA, successful treatment for alcohol dependency requires the following:

    • "Going to drug counseling and group meetings.
    • Avoiding the people, places and situations that get you into trouble.
    • Working with your counselor to show that you are really trying to change your life.
    • Learning things like anger management and job skills so you have more choices in life."

If you suspect that you may have a drinking problem, or if you know someone who abuses alcohol, please contact SAMHSA’s National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI) at 1-800-729-6686 for more information.
