Work Zone Awareness Week: April 7-11, 2008

The 8th annual Work Zone Awareness Week will be held April 7th - 11th, 2008.  Organized by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), this year's theme is "Slow for the Cone Zone."  The event is recognized across the nation, but the initial kick-off celebration will be held on April 8th in Sacramento, California -- the first annual kick-off held outside the DC Metro area.  The event aims to draw national attention to motorist and worker safety and mobility issues in work zones.

ATSSA recommends the following safety tips for motorists to reduce the likelihood of highway worker injury due to automobile accidents:

  • "Drive within the posted speed limits.
  • Dedicate your full attention to the roadway.
  • Disengage from distracting activities, such as changing radio stations and especially using mobile phones.
  • Pay close attention to merge signs, flaggers, and don't change lanes within the work zone.
  • Watch out -- not only for workers in the zone, but also for their equipment.
  • Turn on vehicle headlights to become more conspicuous to workers and to other motorists."

We at Regan Zambri & Long hope you'll allow extra time to drive safely through highway work zones this summer season, and that you'll take time to review some of our earlier blog postings regarding motorist safety and accident prevention.
